Young Artists High School Exhibition welcomes 12 students from WPHS

By Olivia Tuzel

An artist's dream is to show people the work that bloomed out of her hands, as well as the inspiration/thought process behind her creation. Endless hours, cramped muscles and charcoal stained fingers all lead up to this indescribable moment. So, as soon as the date of the Young Artists High School Exhibition began began to approach, AP Art and Advanced Art Portfolio students from White Plains High School were quick to review their work and hope for a spot in this prestigious event.

Twenty twenty-four marks the 41st year of the Young Artists High School Exhibition held at the Katonah Museum of Art. This exhibition highlights the work of senior students across numerous counties in New York and Connecticut, such as those in Westchester, Rockland, Fairfield, etc. All pieces are unique and various media line the exhibition walls. However, students do not cut straight to exhibiting their work. They are first invited to collaborate with museum professionals to help design and personally install their selected pieces, making this event so much more interactive and impactful than expected at first glance.

Interestingly enough, the selection process at the high school for which art would be exhibited was in the hands of students. Peers in the AP and Advanced Art decided which pieces should be displayed at the museum. After decisions were made, the selected artwork was professionally framed and sent to Katonah.

This year, 12 incredibly talented seniors from WPHS will be exhibiting their artwork in Katonah. These students are Allison Porcelli, Katerina Trantos, Taryn Nicol, Kara Ha, Raquel Dominguez, Jaishon Edwards, Galilea Dominguez, Charlie Rojas Hernandez, Elise Sadler, Keegan Murray, Nia Griffin, and Cassia Binder. Each piece is incredibly distinctive and connects to the creator in its own way.

Mr. Chiariello, the teacher of these exceptional students, recognizes how special it feels to be a selected artist in the Young Artists High School Exhibition. “When I was a senior at Woodlands high school,” he said, “I had a piece selected for this exhibit, so I fully appreciate how prestigious it is to be part of the show.”

The Orange wishes to extend a special shoutout to Cassia Binder, who has been selected to represent the advertisement for this particular exhibition. She was named the winner of the Young Artists 2024 Graphic Design competition after participating in a graphic design workshop at the museum.

The exhibit will be from February11 to March 3. The Orange congratulates all WPHS artists who will be exhibiting at the Katonah Museum of Art!
