Varsity Softball Hires New Head Coach

White Plains brings in former assistant to continue softball’s legendary legacy.

By: Peri Kahn

The 2022 varsity softball season wasn’t just historic because the team made it the section finals; it was also the last season for former head coach Ted O’Donnell. Coach OD, as his players and most of White Plains know him, was a talented softball coach who led one of New York State’s best high school softball programs for over 25 years, bringing multiple teams to section finals and sending many girls to play at the college level.

Although last season marked the end of an era for White Plains softball, a new one is soon approaching with the hiring of new head coach, Chris Rowan. Coach Chris was Coach OD’s assistant coach for over 10 years and was the clear choice for Coach OD’s successor. Besides working by Coach OD’s side for many years, Coach Chris has years of experience in the travel softball industry, working with the Empire State Huskies and Lady Fury. Additionally, Coach Chris has his own business, CR23, where he provides hitting, fielding, and strength training to aspiring softball players.

Recently, Coach Chris explained that this year is a crucial year for transitioning the program. As Coach OD leaves behind a significant legacy, there are obviously large shoes to fill, but Coach Chris has no doubt that he can accomplish this and more.

So, how bright is the future for White Plains softball? Hopefully, with the leadership of returning players, the addition of new talent, and Coach Chris, the Tigers can finally bring home a coveted Section 1 trophy.
