Spotlight: Key Club

By Lauren Azrin

During a time with so much change and uncertainty, doing good for the community is more important and appreciated than ever. Our WPHS Key Club has been doing just that, with multiple efforts this fall dedicated to helping others that are making a real impact.

In November, the Key Club began a letter writing campaign to all of the administrators in the White Plains School District. Club members collectively wrote hundreds of letters expressing their gratitude for staff’s adaptability and dedication to students during this time. The letters were extremely well-received, with an overwhelming response from recipients that these letters “made their week,” were a “wonderful surprise,” and made them “smile ear-to-ear,” as well as that they were “touched” by the letter.

But Key Club isn’t stopping there. The next phase of the letter writing campaign that they plan to begin this week is writing these gratitude letters to hospital staff. This time the club will be tackling an even more ambitious number of people: thousands. They hope that these emails will brighten the days of dedicated and selfless front-line workers in hospitals who have been giving their all to protect their community for months.

Lastly, the Key Club has begun their annual toy drive, and it’s already kicked off with a bang! Hundreds of dollars of toys have been donated, and there’s still a week to go until the drive ends on the 20th. The Key Club encourages all to donate any new or unwrapped toys, as well as gift cards, by dropping them off in B-229. The toys get donated to Toys for Tots and help children who wouldn’t normally get gifts this holiday season. It’s a great cause that is especially important this year, when so many have been facing hardship. If you can, please consider donating and sharing some holiday spirit with your community.

It’s comforting to know that there are groups like Key Club bringing smiles to those around them in times like these. We thank the Key Club for their efforts and encourage anyone who wants to to get involved!

Key Club meets on Wednesdays at 11:45. Email Ms. Woodward, club advisor, at lindawoodward@wpcsd.k12.ny.us for Zoom meeting information. All are welcome!
