Movie Review : The Invitation

By: Danielle Mitchell

If you’ve been looking for a thrilling horror movie, look no further. The Invitation, a gory movie that you won’t want to miss, was released on August 26th, 2022. It was directed by Jessica M. Thompson, who also directed The Handmaid’s Tale.

The Invitation opens with a woman locked in a room and being encouraged to eat. She manages to escape. Just before jumping to her death, she vows that, “This ends here, with me.”

Then we meet Evelyn (Game of Thrones actress Natalie Emmanuel), the protagonist. We learn that Evelyn does not have any other family members alive except for her mother. Early on, her mother passes away. Later in the movie, she takes a DNA test to see if any of her other family members are still alive.

The results find a long-lost cousin (Oliver) who wants to meet up with her. He wants her to meet her family in England. “Everyone is dying to meet you,” he says. Oliver is played by Star Wars’ Hugh Skinner. He tells Evelyn there will be a wedding soon in London and convinces her to come.

After meeting the man who owns the mansion, the charming Walter Deville (played by Thomas Doherty, also in Descendants) realizes that they have much in common. Evelyn forms a strong connection with Walter very quickly.

Her fantasy romance turns out to be her worst nightmare after she begins to realize that things are not what they seem. She says, “I want to go home” to which Walter replies, “This is your home.”

Filled with thunder, lightning, horror, and eerie suspense, this is the movie to watch this Halloween. Get some popcorn, soda, candy, and a friend and enjoy this terrifying film.
