It's Time to Focus on AP Exams

By Gaby Maldonado

AP exams have begun, and students will only have a few hours to complete a test about everything they have learned throughout the school year.

AP Exams are standardized exams designed to measure how well you have mastered the content and skills of a specific AP course. The 2022 AP Exams will be administered in schools as paper and-pencil tests over two weeks in May: May 2–6 and May 9–13. AP Exams are important to take seriously because these exams will provide insight into your potential to succeed at the college level and they will help you get used to the many tests that you will be taking in the future.

Teachers have been preparing you for the AP since the beginning of the school year and it is up to you to demonstrate your skills and abilities by working hard.

WPHS history teacher Mr. Davis states, “In a world where standardized tests could be the measure of getting to the next level, it is never a bad idea to learn how to study properly, how to organize yourself professionally. It is important to work together to support the highest common denominator and that is student progress, rather than the lowest common denominator which is not being engaged and concerned about your knowledge and skill set.” The best thing to do to prepare for an AP Exam is to ask questions, review notes, and practice.

First, you can ask your teacher for help and attend review sessions. For example, World History teachers are providing review sessions during lunch and after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The last two review sessions for the AP World History Exam will be on 5/3 and 5/6. If you cannot attend these review sessions, it is always a great idea to message your teacher and ask questions on topics you are struggling with through Remind or Outlook.

One simple but effective way to prepare is to review notes and presentations that you have completed throughout the year. Review the material you have completed in class and set aside at least 30 minutes or more each day to review past work. Refreshing your memory on a regular basis is a great strategy for effective learning.

Finally, one of the best ways to practice is to ask your teacher about the practice resources in AP Classroom. AP Classroom is a website that teachers can use to help you prepare for the exam by setting up progress checks with multiple-choice and free-response questions on the topics you have learned in the course. In addition, you can also access AP Daily videos that cover all course content and skills to help support your learning.
